Description

Ayurveda for the protection of mucous membranes in the nose, throat and oral cavity

The entire mouth, nose and throat cavity is an entrance into the body. All food and drink, and all inhaled air passes through this entrance. The body tries to keep this smooth by producing a good watery fluid, such as saliva. You can help this entire area maintain hygiene and effectiveness. Ayurveda has a wide range of possible support and protection measures in this area. Examples include: using tooth powder, administering nasal oil, gargling with certain liquids, and so on.

Bacteria, viruses and other possible ‘invaders’

In Ayurveda it is assumed that ‘intruders’ only or mainly have the opportunity to cause problems if there is a breeding ground in which to nestle. The entrance for many intruders is through the nose and mouth, which is also a ‘seat area’ of Kapha Dosha. Not only is it important to support the overall immune system, but also the entrance area of the mouth, throat and nose. This lecture explains – conceptually-biologically-physiologically – how this seat area of Kapha relates to the proposed treatments and remedies. Part of this explanation coincides with what in Ayurveda falls under parts of the daily morning routine. This again falls under the so-called Dinacharya, and this will also be discussed in an introductory way in this lecture.

Practical tips and explanations why

This lecture also discusses the Ayurvedic view of the immune system, and in particular the first line of protection in the mouth, throat and nasal cavity is further elaborated. How can you properly support and protect mucous membranes in these areas, and deeper into the lungs? How can you cleanse and remove imbalances in these areas? And how can you strengthen and revitalize these areas after they have been weakened by illness? There are several, relatively simple methods – which Ayurveda has been working with for thousands of years – that correspond exactly to what is physiologically needed to strengthen this entire ENT area and keep it as clean as possible. What these are, and what the added value of each is, is explained in this lecture. You can then start working on it yourself – usually quite immediately.
